The Ok Tedi River Heavy Minerals Project is a tailings sand retreatment project.
The project is located to the south of the producing Ok Tedi Copper-Gold Mine (operated by Ok Tedi Mining Limited ‘OTML’), which is one of the largest mining operations in PNG and currently contains the revised 2013 Global Resource of 871 Mt @ 0.44% Cu and 0.54g/t Au.
Substantial volumes of tailings have been generated from the Ok Tedi copper and gold mine which have been deposited into the active drainage of the Ok Tedi River System with total inputs originally estimated as 1.720 million tons assuming a mine closure date of 2013. To date, 170 million m3 of sediment has been recovered from the river and placed into two engineered stockpiles located 100km downstream from the mine. The stockpiled material contains a heavy mineral suite of magnetite, copper and gold bearing sulphides and free gold.
